Jazmin graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Cardiff University in 2016.
Jazmin's love for reading and skill in writing were developed during this period of study. During the course of the degree, Jazmin was exposed to the very first known works of English literature, to the most modern literary movements we see emerging in the 21st century. Jazmin studied Chaucer from A Level until the final year of the degree and nurtured her existing love for Shakespeare. Some of Jazmin's favourite topics included the post-1945 American novel where she first discovered the work of Hemingway and Kerouac, and fiction of the Indian Subcontinent which explored rich literature from across the English-speaking world. Jazmin's love for Victorian literature continued throughout the time on the course, with writers like Poe, Dickens, Stevenson and Shelley being studied in depth. Jazmin's area of expertise was established here, and strengthened during the dissertation research - this year-long research project examined Victorian Gothic literature, namely Brontë's Wuthering Heights and Du Maurier's Rebecca.
Jazmin graduated with an MSc from the University of Bristol in 2020.
The Master of Science course explored the concept of pedagogy - the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept. The 2 year course was completed alongside her full time job as a secondary school English teacher, enabling the direct enrichment of Jazmin's every day teaching. Jazmin conducted live research, statistical analysis and data collection methods that would directly illuminate paths to improve the learning experiences of students she taught every day. Jazmin's research topics involved subjects like: the science of feedback and praise; the varying theoretical approaches to retention and retrieval; curriculum planning and moderation. Jazmin's first year was spent researching the functions and effectiveness of peer assessment, followed by a cultural study of the changes happening in the education systems in the 21st century. Jazmin's dissertation topic was a study into giftedness: the identification, neglect and stimulation of gifted students in UK secondary schools, with research that examined their needs and their reading habits. This subject is now a specialism of Jazmin's, and this research informs the everyday design and delivery of her lessons.
Jazmin graduated with a PGCE in Secondary English with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) from the University of Bristol in 2017.
The PGCE was completed through the teaching programme Teach First, an alternative route into teaching only taken by 11% of teachers in the UK. Teach First candidates study for their PGCE whilst working full time in a classroom as a secondary school English teacher. This is different to traditional PGCE routes which give short placements in different schools, and the majority of time is spent studying from university. Jazmin's route into teaching was intense and provided an environment where progress was quick. Jazmin was teaching every day whilst training, making the learning process rapid which fed her passion for teaching. Jazmin developed the skills of an OFSTED outstanding teacher and progressed to leadership positions within the school by her NQT year. Jazmin's time in the classroom gave her the exposure to thousands of learners with unique learning styles, generating an appreciation for the intricacies of teaching and learning. Jazmin was exposed to high level training as a classroom teacher and school leader, as well as attending exam moderation and leading the English department with her role as deputy head of English.
